According to the 1900 census, Catherine emigrated to the United States in 1847, i.e. when she was about 11 years of age. She appears to have met her future husband, William, while working as a housekeeper at the boarding house in Chicago in which William was living.
Bill Hudson, in his work 'The Hudsons of Ballyeagh' tells us "Catherine had a sister, Mrs. Honora Burns of Toronto, Canada, and a brother, William Walsh of Cincinnati, Ohio."
