After their marriage Patrick and his wife, Maria, farmed in Ballybane, Boyle, Co. Roscommon. Patrick appears to have left for the United States at some point thereafter but we do not know if Maria went with him or if she had died by then. In any case, their daughter, Sophia, was entrusted to the care of Maria's father, Laurence. Patrick died in 1896 aged 45 in Philadelphia; the cause of death was heatstroke. In his will Patrick left £160 to Laurence, who is described as "the guardian of the child".
