James was killed in action in the Philippines during World War II. He was serving with the U.S. Army 188th Infantry Regiment Airborne Division, a glider regiment. He was awarded a Silver Star and a Purple Heart and is buried in the American Cemetery, Fort Bonifacio, Manila in lot N, row 9, grave 51. He and his wife, Beatrice, did not have children.
