The 1891 census tells us that William was an "iron merchant and agent". He appears to have been living with his mother, Mary, in Liverpool at the time and was unmarried. By the time of the 1901 census he was still unmarried and living with Mary. They were boarding at the time at the home of a Hester Simmons in Chorlton, Lancashire and William was working as a "Metal and Hard[illegible]Agent".
