Augustine (Austin) STACK
(7 Dec 1879 - 27 Apr 1929)
Austin was a nationalist and politician. He was also a fine Gaelic footballer and captained the Kerry team that won the 1904 All-Ireland championship. Austin Stack Park in Tralee, a GAA stadium, is named after him, as is the town's Austin Stack Hurling and Football Club.
Austin was a member of the Irish Republican Brotherhood and was active in Kerry during the 1916 Rising for which he was sentenced to penal servitude for life. Released under the general amnesty of 1917, he was elected as an abstentionist Sinn Féin Member of Parliament for Kerry West in the 1918 Westminster election, becoming a member of the 1st Dáil. Austin was active on the anti-Treaty side during the the Civil War (1922-1923) and was captured in 1923. The following year, seeking political prisoner status, he went on hunger strike for 41 days before being released in July 1924. A year later he married Una, in whose home he had been given shelter while on the run in 1920. They lived on Strand Road, Sandymount, Dublin. However his health had deteriorated due to the 1924 and other hunger strikes and he died five years later aged 49.
