Individual Details

James Joseph Anthony TROY

(29 Jul 1883 - 1954)

James was ordained a priest in Carlow and worked initially in Davenport, Iowa. He served as a U.S. Army chaplain during World War I. After the war he remained with the Army of Occupation in Germany, later helping to direct rehabilitation work in Poland and Belgium. In the 1920s he was decorated for his efforts by Prince Albert of Belgium.

James spent some time in Iowa where he was apparently known as The Church Builder of the Mid West. He later worked in St. Paul, Minnesota. 1934 and 1935 saw him working for the Society for the Propogation of the Faith in China, India and the Malay States, and in 1937 he was appointed pastor (parish priest) of the newly created St. Austin's parish in Minneapolis. During World War II James once again served as an army chaplain, attaining the rank of Colonel.

Oddly, James had a younger brother named James Michael, born in 1896. Perhaps there has been a transcription error on the Irish Genealogy website for James Michael.
