Richard was a medical doctor, politician, historian and Francophile. He fought with Thomas Ashe in the 1916 Rising and subsequently spent time in prison in England. In 1918 he was elected M.P. for East Limerick but retired from politics in 1924 and returned to medicine. He later became a director of the Abbey Theatre in Dublin and was appointed Irish Film Censor in 1941, a position he held until 1954.
