According to his obituary in The Baltimore Sun (28 July 1995), John was born in Tokyo, where his father, an electrical engineer for Western Electric Co., was on secondment as a consultant to the Japanese government. John was raised in Maplewood, New Jersey, and moved to Baltimore, Matyland as a young man when his father became head of Western Electric's Point Breeze plant. John was an ensign stationed at Pearl Harbor during the Japanese attack in 1941, and was discharged with the rank of commander at the end of World War II. He later ran his own company, selling glass and other building materials in the wholesale sector.
