Individual Details

Michael FITZGERALD

(Abt 1852 - )

Michael moved from Charlestown to Dublin in 1887 and became a wine merchant and rectifying distiller, setting up his own company named Fitzgerald & Co. In 1893, two years after his father's death, his stepmother, Bridget, sold the Charlestown shop and she, along with her son (i.e., Michael's half brother), Martin, moved to Dublin. Martin joined Michael in the running of the business and they relocated Fitzgerald & Co. to Middle Abbey St. (from where we do not know) and the business flourished, despite the premises being badly damaged during the 1916 Rising.

In 1903 Fitzgerald & Co. bought the John P. Flannery store from Michael's widowed mother-in-law, Sarah. However, the purchase was to lead to a court case in 1912 (details unknown), which appears to have caused a split in the family. Michael had resigned from the company in 1908 and at some point had become proprietor of Flannerys shop in Ballaghaderreen, although he continued to live on Lansdowne Road in Dublin.

Note that in 1898 Ballaghaderreen was transferred from Co. Mayo to Co. Roscommon so it is important for researchers to check both counties for information.
