Before emigrating to the United States with his wife, Ellen, and their elder children, Michael worked as a herdsman for the Bishop family in Annaghmaghera, Kilkeevin. It was impossible to save money as Michael received no wage, just the use of a cottage and a plot for growing vegetables.
