Gillis, his wife Elsje, and their oldest four children came to Manhattan in 1659 from Gelderland, Netherlands. He established a large estate over the years having a property that extended from below 14th Street to 21st Street and from the Hudson River to Warren Road. Wouldn't you like to own that much of Manhattan Island now?

Gillis and his wife Elsje immigrated with their four children. The total cost for the passage was 90 guilders, and it appears that this amount was advanced by the Dutch West India Company.Death
Elsje made her will on 22 May 1701 as a widow.Here is the will of Gillis DeMandeville; I believe that the daughter Heltie wife of Lowren Johnsen is our ancestor, Aeltie who married Laurens Jansen De Camp:

John Nanfan Esq'r Lieu't Governour & Comand'r in Chief of the province of New Yorke &c To all to whom these presents Shall Come or may Consern Greeting Know yee that at New Yorke the Two & Twentieth day of May Instant before me the last & Testament of Jellis Mandeveill Dec'd annexed to these preesents was proved approved & allowed fo having while he lived & at the times of his Death Goods Chattles & Credits in Divers places within this province by means whereof the full disposition of all & Singular the Goods Chattles & Credits & the granting ye administration of them also the hearing of account Callcullation or reckoning of ye administraton and finall Discharge & Dismisson from the same unto me alone Solely & nott unto another Imprimus Judge are manifestly known to belong & the administraton of all & Singular the goods Chattles & Credits of ye said Dec'd & his s'd last will & Testament in any manner of ways Conserning was Granted Elsie Mandeveill widdow relict & Executriz in the said last will and Testament named Cheifly of well & truly administrating the Same & of makeing a true & perfect Inventory of all & Singular the goods chattles & credits & exhibiting ye same into ye Serveys officiator before the Two & twentieth Day of Nov'r next Ensueing & of rendring a just & true acc't Callcullation or reckoning being Duely & Lawfully Sworn upon the holy Evangelist of Almighty God In testimony wherof I have Caused the prerogative Seale to be hereunto affixed at New Yorke ye 22n day of May Instant Anno Dtm 1701
In the Name of God Amen the fifteenth Day of Sept'r in the Eighth year of ye reign of our Soveriegn Lord William the third by the grace of god King of England Scotland France & Ireland Defend'r of the faith & c & in the year of
our lord one thousand Six hundred ninety & six 1696 I Jellis Mandeveill of Grenwich in the County of New Yorke being of Sound & perfect health of body thanks be to Almighty God for the Same & Calling to mind the Uncertainty of this Transitory life & that all flesh must yield unto death when it Shall please God to Call & being desirous to Settle things in Order do make this my last will & testament in Mann'r & form following Revokeing & absolutely unwilling by these presents all & every Testament & Testaments will & wills heretofore by me made & declared Either by word or by writeing notwithstanding any promise to ye Contrary or Clause Derogatory in the same & this to be only taken for my last will & testament & no other First I bequeath my Soule unto almighty God my Maker & to Jesus Christ my Redeemet & to ye holy Gost my Sanctifyer & my body to the Earth from whence it came to be buried in Such desent & Christian manner as to my Execut'r hereafter named Shall be thought fitt & convenient there to rest until my Soule & body shall meete againe & be joyned together at the joyfull resurection & be maide pertaikers of the never faiding joys of Imortality w'th god in mercy through ye merits of Jesus Christ alone hath promised & prepaired for all those that truly & unfeigned by repent & believe in him And touching Such Temporall Esatate of God's Chattles & Debts as ye Lord has been pleased far above my deserts to bestow upon me I do order give bequeath & dispose there of in mann'r & forme following Imprimis I give & bequeath unto my well beloved wife Elsie Mandeveill all my Estate Reall & personall duing her naturall life or till She Shall happen to remarry then & in Such case I give only to my wife ye equall half or moyety of all my Estate reall & personall Secondly I give & bequeath unto my Son Hendrick Mandeveill in preforence to all other gifts & in right of being ye Eldist Sonne all that my farme or plantation lyeing & being in Queens County upon Nassau Island in ye Jurisdicton of Hempsteed together w'th all the houses barnes Stables fences Improvements meadows & apperatances therunto belonging or in any wise appertaining
Item I give & bequeath unto my Son David Mandeveill for & in Consideraton of his great Services & for other Sufficient reasons & motives me thereunto moveing in preferance to all other gifts & before any dividend be made all that my Negro Called Peter together w'th the Sume of fifty pounds An't money of this province to hee to be paid to him by my Execut'r here after named Item I give & bequeath all the rest of my Estate both reall & personall to all my children namely Hendrick Mandeveill, David Mandeveill, Tryntie Mandeveill now wife of Cornelius Jansen De Seeu, Heltie Mandeveill now wife of Lowren Johnsen, Gerrette Mandeveill now wife of Peter Meett & Gerittie Mandeveill now wife of John Meet to be Equally divided between them without any reference to male or female Sexes Item it is my further will & desire & Speciall Comand that my farme or bowary at Greenwich upon New Yorke Island now in my possession together w'th the houses barnes Stables orchards fences & other ye appertances thereunto belonging Shall be Sould to ye highest bidder of all my afores'd children & ye money Equally to be divided between them and I do hereby further Impower & authorize My Execut'r hereafter named or one of them to give & pass Sufficient deeds of Sale & Conveyances for ye Same in due forme And Lastly I do hereby ordaine Constitute & appoint my s'd wife Elsie Mandeveill to be Sole executrix of this my last will & after her decease I nominate & appoint my two Sonns Hendrick & David Mandeveill Execut'r of this my last will & testament In wittness whereof I the s'd Jellis Mandeviell have here unto Sett my hand & seale in New Yorke the day & year before written Jellis Mandeveill
