Richard Dole was the son of William and Dorothy Barnard Dole and emigrated from Rangeworthy, Gloucester County just north of Bristol, England. His wife Hannah was the daughter of Henry and Honour Rolfe. Both Richard and Henry are mentioned in a memorial to the founders of Newbury. He came as an apprentice as a tanner to John Lowell.
