John Burroughs I
(Ca 1617 - 3 August 1678)
John Burroughs, 1617-1678 : and his descendants in Hunterdon and Salem Counties, New Jersey, compiled by Hazel Simpson
John Burroughs (1617-1678) married (1) Joanna Jessup, daughter of John Jessup of Massachusetts. They were the parents of four children: Jeremiah (1651-1698), Joseph (d.1738), Joanna and Mary. John married (2) Elizabeth (Jessup) Reed (d.1679) daughter of Thomas Jessup of Connecticut and widow of Thomas Reed. They were the parents of one son, John Burroughs (1665-1699) of Newton, Long Island, NY. John, the younger married Margaret Woodward, daughter of Lambert Woodward of Newton, L.I. Family members lived in New Jersey, Long Island, NY, Massachusetts and elsewhere.
The Burroughs family in Newtown can trace its American genealogy back to 1637, when John Burroughs landed in Salem, Massachusetts. In 1643 he seems to have settled in Newtown, where he occupied a farm that remained intact in the possession of his descendants until about 1835. (A History of Long Island, volume 1, p. 708)
John Burroughs, the progenitor of the American family of this name, was born in Dorsetshire, England, in 1617, and is found at Salem in the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1642. He was a member of the long parliament that assembled November 3, 1640, which was dissolved by Cromwell, and with many others fled from England to escape religious persecution. He removed from Salem. Massachusetts, to Newtown, Long Island, of which he was one of the patentees in 1666. He was a fine penman, and filled the office of town clerk for eleven years. He was a man of resolute character and a warm advocate of popular rights. He died in August,1678. His will is on record in the surrogate's office New York city. He left issue Jeremiah, Joseph, John, Joanna and Mary. (History of Long Island, volume 2, p.175)
