Richard Whittier

(Abt 1584/85 - )

'On pages 252-255 abstracts have been given aof all the Whittier wills, administration acts, and administration bonds that are to be found in the Sarum (Salisbury) courts down to the time of the Commonwealth. There are no Whittier wills for this period in the Perogative Court of Canterbury. The Whittier families in Downton, Landford, and Whuteparish, co. Wilts, were doubtless all closely connected with one another. Research among the wills at Winchester and the examination of the parish registers at Salisbury and the transcripts fo Lanlord (where the original registers do not extend farther back then 1671) would probably disclose the parentage of the Richard Whittier of Sarum (Salisbury) who married, 23 Jan. 1608/9, Mary, daughter of John Rolfe of Whiteparish, and was the father of Thomas Whittier, who came to New England in the Confidence in 1638, aged 18, as a servant to his uncle John Rolfe. It is possible the Richard. father of the emmigrant Thomas Whittier, was born about 1585 and wasa sonof that Richard who was son of Henry Whittier of Lanford, the testator of 1583/4 - E.F.'
