George Abbott
(29 Oct 1562 - 1632/33)
Protestant clergyman, born in Guildford, Surrey. He studied at Oxford, and rose to be Master of University College (1597), Dean of Winchester (1600), and three times Vice-Chancellor of Oxford University (1600-1605). He owed his promotion to the sees of Lichfield (1609), London (Bishop 1610) and Canterbury (Archbishop 1611-1633), to the Earl of Dunbar. A sincere but narrow-minded Calvinist, he was equally opposed to Catholics and to heretics.
