Individual Details
Elizabeth Wheaton
(Abt 1552 - )
Dear Steve I have found your Elizabeth as Elizabeth WHEATEN on Family Search, and on the International Genealogical Index – married 13th September 1567 – and the information was filmed by the Latter Day Saints so is more accurate than if it had been entered by an individual. However, she is the very earliest Elizabeth I have, and I have no other Bedfordshire WHEATON/WHEATEN records before her marriage either! There are other individuals with variants of the name in Leighton Buzzard and Woburn Bedfordshire, but none in Northill as far as I could see. So, no further forwards (or rather backwards!) I’m afraid. When I first read the information you had sent I thought that it showed the grand-daughter of Robert and Elizabeth WILKINSON as born 1604/5 in Charlestown, Suffolk, Massachusetts which suggested that Elizabeth and her husband must have gone to America at a very early date, before the Mayflower, but then I saw that the next child was born in England…so I am not too sure that I have interpreted the details right. However, I assume that America is where your live and therefore maybe you don’t know about our Parish Registers…if you do…my apologies and skip the next bit. It was in the reign of Queen Elizabeth the first that baptisms, marriages and burials were first recorded in each parish. To start with some parishes just wrote on separate sheets of parchment…many of which of course were lost. And some parishes did not comply with the regulations so it is nearer 1600 that such records really began to be kept. So, to get back to 1567 is really a huge achievement. The next step would be to visit Bedfordshire Record Office to see if they have any Manorial papers. I have looked through Goggle for the “Bedfordshire Record Office” and it appears that only 30% of their records have been indexed on line, so it can’t be an “on-line” search. One day I might get to that particular Record Office to look for WHEATONs…though not in the foreseeable future I’m afraid. I am particularly interested because, as I explained previously, I have not been able o find the birth of my Thomas in about 1700. The WHEATON name appears to originate from Devon…in which case it is probable that a WHEATON family moved from there north east towards Huntingdonshire (where Thomas married) and in doing so they would have passed through Bedfordshire. I do have a Bedfordshire family…if you go into my web site (address below), to the Index/Home page, and then into BEDFORDSHIRE WHEATONS….this family starts too late for your Elizabeth. Sorry I cannot be of any help Thanks again for writing All the best Jean Jean Wheaton e-mail: terry36@wheatonjk.co.uk WHEATON ONE NAME WEB SITE: www.wheatonjk.co.uk
