Elijah Born circa 1820 in Gorham (then Shelburn Addition), NH Occupation Farmer/ Co. H, Regiment 5, NH Infantry in Civil War According to his Military Service Records in the National Archives, Israel was born on 1819/1820 in Shelburne Addition (later called Gorham), NH. Israel enlisted as a private on 14 Oct. 1861 at Gorham (records also say he enlisted at Concord), NH to serve for three years in Co. H of the Fifth Regiment of NH Vols.(Infantry) . 17 Sept 1862, wounded in leg in Sharpsburg, MD, Battle of Antietam [Wikipedia: The Battle of Antietam (also known as the Battle of Sharpsburg, particularly in the South), fought on September 17, 1862, near Sharpsburg, Maryland, and Antietam Creek, as part of the Maryland Campaign, was the first major battle in the American Civil War to take place on Northern soil. According to the US Census, Israel in 1870 was living in the same household in Gorham, NH as his sister Anne and her husband Jonas S.
