Hugh Beaton Simpson
(21 Jul 1805 - 1879)
He came with his father to Rumney in 1809. He attended the district schools of Rumney and left home when a boy to enter upon a mercantile career in Boston. For a time he studied for the Universalist ministry, but his health failed. He returned to Rumney and cared for his parents in their old age. He bought a hotel at West Rumney and conducted it, in addition to his farm and general store there, until he sold out to his son. Clinton B. Simpson, in 1861. He was a Democrat in politics and held various offices of trust and honor. He was appointed postmaster of Rumney by President Buchanan ; was selectman of the town and represented it in the state legislature.
