Hugh 4th/III le Bigod 3rd Earl of Norfolk & Earl Marshall of England
(1186 - 11 Feb 1225)
He took part from the beginning in the Barons' Magna Charta proceedings.Not many particulars of this Baron's life have been preserved, as he enjoyed for only a few years the title of Earl of Norfolk and Suffolk, and his father's estates and honors, to which he had succeeded in the 5th of King Henry III. He died four years later. In Maud's right, Hugh acquired the Earldom of Pembroke, and in this rank bore the royal sceptre at the coronation of King Richard I. Magna Charta by John S. Hugh Bigod, Surety for the Magna Charta. There are few particulars
concerningthis baron's life extant, for he enjoyed the title of Earl of
Norfolk and Suffolk, and his father's estates and honors, only a few
years, as he died in the 9th year of Henry III, 1225, only five years
after the death of his fatherin 1220. He married Maud, eldest daughter
of William Mareschal, Earl of Pembroke, hereditary Marshal of England,
from which post the family assumed its surname. This William le Maresch
was left at home when Richard I, Coeur de Lion, set out for the Holy La
on the Third Crusade, and was appointed one ofthe assistants to the
Chief Justice of England in the government of the realm during the
absence of the King. He had 5 sons, who all died sine prole, when all h
honors became extant, and his great inheritance devolved upon his 5
daughters, Maud, Joane, Isabel, Sybil and Eve.
