Ananias was the son of Martha "Polly" Horton and grandson of Isaac "Ike" Horton Jr. and Mary "Polly" Watts. At age 19 Ananias joined the Union Army, Pvt, Co M, 2 Arkansas Cavalry. On 23 December 1862, at the height of the Civil War, he married Mary Jane Johnson. They had the following children: Mary, Sarah, Isaac, Samuel Wayne, Andrew, John Newton, and Martha Hannah.
