Folco I d'Este

(1070 - 1136)

According to Wikipedia:

Folco I d'Este ( 1070 - 1136 ) succeeded his father Alberto Azzo II d'Este as lord of Este , a citizen of the Paduan area . He was the ancestor of the Italian line of the Casa d'Este .

He was the third son of Alberto Azzo II d'Este, the second born of his second wife, Garsenda [1] [2] . The older brother was actually a half-brother; in fact Guelph was born of his father's first wife, Cunegonda . The second son Ugo instead had the same parents.

After the death of his father, which occurred in 1097 , Folco inherited the Italian possessions of the family, which were located in Veneto , around Mantua , Padua , Treviso and Verona , while his half-brother Guelfo inherited the lands north of the Alps , in Bavaria . The latter, however, did not peacefully accept his father's decision and tried unsuccessfully to conquer the lands assigned to Folco, supported by the powerful Bavarian family line, the Welfen . In 1070 Folco's brother, Ugo , became Earl of Maine , inheriting the lands of their maternal grandfather and moving to France [3] .

The Estensi, the Italian branch, and Ferrara
While the brothers moved their interests to the Germanic and French lands Folco, who had five children (perhaps six), founded the Italian branch of the family. The names of the Estensi linked to the title of marquis appear for the first time in a document in 1171, therefore long after the death of Folco I, who always remained linked to the city of Este . Only his son and heir Obizzo then moved to Ferrara (although alternating his home between Este and the Emilian city), thus linking the fate of the city and the family for the following centuries [4] .

Lineage
Folco I married in 1109 and had six children:

Azzo IV (? -1145 approximately)
Bonifazio (? -1163)
Folco (? -1178 approximately)
Obizzo (1110-1193), his successor
Beatrice (1075-1110), perhaps married in 1108 Alfonso VI of León or a member of the Catanei family of Lendinara. Its authorship is uncertain [5]
Alberto (? -1184)
