William Coleman Hensley was married to Clarissa Malinda Sanders about 1847 in Van Buren, Arkansas. They had five children.

William served as a Private in Colonel Samuel Murphy Leslie's Company "G" of the 45th Arkansas Militia CSA. This Unit had one mission which was to round up and arrest members of a sympathetic Pro-Union group of men who were members of the Arkansas Peace Society and then march them to Little Rock, Arkansas where they were given the choice of enlisting in the Confederate Army or be hanged. All of the men chose to enlist, but eventually deserted or joined Missouri Union Units when their enlistments were up.

After his service with the 45th Militia ended on December 20, 1861 both he and his brother enlisted on July 1, 1863 as Privates in Company "L" of the 8th Arkansas Cavalry Regiment, CSA. William became ill and was given a medical discharge and sent home to recover from his illness. Family legend says he died of pneumonia shortly after arriving home. Because the ground was too frozen, he was not buried until the ground thawed.
