George Copyak, 93, passed away Jan. 5, 2013 in Salt Lake City after a brief illness. He was born May 21, 1919 in Diamondville, the son of John and Susan Stevens Copyak.
The youngest of six children, George moved from Diamondville to Rock Springs in 1921. He attended Washington Elementary and Rock Springs Junior High School before starting his work career during the ninth grade, in the local coal mines. He was drafted into the United States Army in April, 1941 and served with the 82nd Airborne throughout the european campaign, returning to Rock Springs in December, 1945 with honorable discharge and several military awards.
George met his wife, Edna Fedell, in Rock Springs in 1948 and they were married on June 12, 1949. George continued his work career in the coal mines and oil fields in Wyoming until his final employment with FMC Corporation in 1960 as a miner and later as a mine surface operator. He retired in the 1980s.
He and his wife built a cabin in the Upper Green River Valley in the early 1970s, where they enjoyed spending time with their sons, families and friends. He was an avid hunter and loved to fish the Green River and its surrounding streams.
They began spending more time in Utah to be nearer to their sons and eventually moved to Utah, still spending much time at the cabin in Wyoming and living near his son Fred and wife Jeannette.
He is survived by three sons, Dennis and wife Leanne, of Salt Lake City, Fred and wife Jeannette of Woods Cross, Utah and George J. of Midvale, Utah; sister Katheryn Croen of Salt Lake City.
He also is survived by eight grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, 4 nephews and 3 nieces, and several great nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by both of his parents; one son, Jody Copyak; two sisters, Ann Snider and Margaret Nesbit; and two brothers, John and Edward Copyak.
