Pepin "The Old," Mayor of Austrasia

PEPIN OF LANDEN, helped CLOTAIRE II of Neustria in conquest of Austrasia (613), which he later governed for DAGOBERT I as mayor of the palace. Out of the marriage of his daughter with the son of ARNULF, BISHOP OF METZ, arose the Carolingian dynasty. His grandson, PEPIN OF HERISTAL, d c 714, ruled Austrasia and Neustria as mayor of the palace, the Merovingian dynasty retained nominal kingship. He was the father of CHARLES MARETL and grandfather of PEPIN THE SHORT, c 714-768, who became mayor in 741. In 751, with the consent of Pope Zacharias, he forced the last Merovingian king, CHILDERIC III, into a monastery and had himself proclaimed king of the Franks. He defended Rome agains the Lombards (754, 756), from whom he wrested Ravenna and other cities. These he ceded to the pope, laying the foundation for the Papal States. He was the father of CHARLEMAGNE. His great-grandson PEPIN I, d 838, son of Emperor LOUIS I, was king of Aquitaine (817-38). He joined in the rebellions of 830 and 833 against his father but each time helped restore him.
