From www.findagrave.com

Jonathen Ruff died 1862, JONATHAN WESLEY RUFF SOLD HIS PROPERTY IN SEARCY CO, AR AND PREPARED TO MOVE WEST, NO DOUBT TO GET AWAY FROM THE CIVIL WAR CONTROVERSY AND THE DIVIDED LOYALTIES IN ARKANSAS. ANYWAY , HE SOLD OUT AND HAD A LOT OF MONEY. BUSHWHACKERS FROM THE BELLE STARR GANG OUT OF OKLAHOMA AND KANSAS JUMPED JONATHAN TO ROB HIM. HE HAD HID HIS MONEY, AND WOULDN'T TELL THEM WHERE. THEY STRUNG HIM UP TO A TREE BY THE HANDS AND BUILT A FIRE UNDER HIS FEET. STILL, HE WOULDN'T TELL. THEN THEY CHANGED ENDS WITH HIM, TYING HIM UPSIDE DOWN BY HIS FEET AND HUNG HIS HEAD IN THE FIRE. HE BURNED TO DEATH NEVER TELLING WHERE HE HID THE MONEY.

THE DEATH OF JONATHAN WESLEY RUFF WAS WITNESSED BY HIS OWN SON JOHN McCOY RUFF, ABOUT 8 YEARS OLD AT THE TIME. HE PASSED THIS TRAGIC STORY DOWN TO HIS CHILDREN FOR US ALL TO SHARE. From the "Entwined" Robertson and Ruff Book by Vonceil Rust Robertson
