Gertrud was a daughter of nobleman Hermann II and his wife Oda von Tecklenburg , daughter of Count Simon I of Tecklenburg and Countess Oda von Berg-Altena . This made her a niece of the Herford abbesses Gertrud II , a sister of Hermann II.

Before April 17, 1236, Gertrud married Count Ludwig of the County of Ravensberg, which was adjacent to Lippe . Four children are known from this marriage:
