Alberto Azzo I (... - 1029 [1] ) was marquis of Ancona , marquis of Milan , count of Luni , Genoa and Tortona . Member of the Obertenghi family and first known member of the Casa d'Este in the period before the arrival in Ferrara , it is attested in the documents from 1011 to 1026.

Alberto Azzo I d'Este, son of Oberto II , a member of the Obertenghi family, was the first historically known member of the Casa d ' Este , one of the most illustrious royal families in Italy [2] .

Before arriving to the Este family tied in particular to the city of Ferrara, a generation will have to pass, in fact it is his son Alberto Azzo II , who died centenary, to be considered the true progenitor of the house of Este [3] .

Alberto Azzo I first appeared in the chronicles in 1011 . On May 10, 1013 he was elected Dominic misso in Italy. In 1014 his older brother Ugo died and Alberto Azzo inherited the "Marca Obertenga" with the marquisate of Milan and the counties of Luni , Genoa and Tortona . He shared the title of margrave of Milan with his brothers Adalberto and Obizzo d'Este. Alberto Azzo had a sister, Berta d'Este, who married Arduino d'Ivrea (once a usurper of the throne of Italy against Emperor Henry II of the Holy Roman Empire ) and in second marriage Olderico Manfredi II . Alberto Azzo I married Adelaide, from the Salica dynasty .

At first Alberto Azzo I and his brothers brought their support to Arduino d'Ivrea against Henry II, but in 1014 they did not oppose the crowning of the emperor as king of Italy . In May of the same year, after the emperor's departure, they still helped their brother. Enrico later laid siege to Pavia , Vercelli and Novara . In 1019 Alberto Azzo reconciled with the emperor, but in 1022 his brothers were captured by Henry's armies and submitted to judgment at Monselice .

As part of the committees of the "Marca Obertenga", the jurisdictions of the cities were gradually subtracted which from autonomous became independent:

Genoa since 958 , in favor of the bishops and then of the consular municipality (from 1099)
Tortona from 979 , in favor of the bishops and then of the municipality (from 1122)
Luni since 981 , in favor of the bishops
Bobbio since 1014 , in favor of the bishops-count and therefore of the "Episcopal County of Bobbio"
Milan from 1046 , in favor of the bishops and then of the consular municipality (from 1117)
In the spring of 1026 Alberto Azzo I and Olderico Manfredi II defended Pavia against the forces of Emperor Corrado II il Salico , successor of Henry II.

Lineage
Alberto Azzo married Adelaide, a relative of Lanfranco, count of Aucia [4] and they had a son, Alberto Azzo II d'Este .
