Military
Ashton Herbert Manhart was a 1932 graduate of the U. S. Military Academy at West Point, New York who retired from the U.S. Army in 1967 after 35 years of service; in WWII, commanded the 3d Battalion, 15th Infantry during action in Morocco, Tunisia, and Sicily; commanded the 15th Infantry during the Anzio landing, Italy; commanded 135th Infantry, 35th Division by the end of the war; in 1950 was deputy assistant commander of the 24th Infantry in Korea; as brigadier general in 1960, commanded 9th Infantry Division at Fort Carson (CO); in 1966 was deputy and vice-director of the Joint Staff at the Pentagon; as lieutenant general in 1966, was U.S. representative to the Permanent Military Deputies Group of the Central Treaty Organization in Turkey. Awards included a Silver Star, two legions of Merit, a Bronze Star, a Purple Heart and the Italian Medal of Military Valor.Source: Bear Canyon Cemetery Records - Manhart Burials at Bear Canon
