Individual Details

Martha Loula Willey

(20 Jan 1863 - 28 Oct 1938)

Lulu Willey was born in Mississippi during the Civil War, while her father was on active duty. Her mother gave her the name Martha Toluda Willey, but when her father heard of her birth, he wrote and asked that she be named Nancy Catherine Willey. Since it was considered bad luck to change a name, they just added the Nancy Catherine and called her Lulu.
Lulu's father died without ever seeing his daughter. Another belief at that time was that a baby who had never seen it's father was supposed to have curative powers. When the neighbors children had colds, rash, etc., they were brought over to let Lulu "blow into their mouth". From "The Descendants of Benager Spell and Dorethea Foreman".
