Leonidas Smith

(Jun 1843 - 1900)

Leonidas Smith is the name that was shown in the prisoner of war records of the north. He was a conscript (Minor) and was a private when captured at Vicksburg. Also in Previous years in Mississippi there were men of different ages named Edmund and Leonidas who may have been relatives. The Edmund who married Hilda Evans in one census stated he was born in the Carolinas. There was also a Leonidas Smith who was a Col. in Confederate army from (I believe) north Louisiana, but may have been from a different branch of the same family.
Leonidas Smith had that spelling when he obtained his marriage license in courthouse in Opelousas. I have had a copy of the license and to it was attached a land bond for $500 by some man named Faulk. I assume that they are packed away somewhere.
I have obtained papers that judged Edmund dead after the civil War and also records of purchase of land from a Doctor whose name I do not now remember. It is time for me to close. Charlie, Thanks for the many records. And many blessings, E. Paul (e-mail message dated 29 May 2000)
