Individual Details
Ambroise Aramer Hoffpauir
(Abt 1851 - 21 Mar 1926)
In Southwest Louisiana Records, Vol 11 p. 190, the marriage of Ambroise Hoffpauir is recorded: "... m. 4 Dec. 1873 Uranie Breaux." The only parent listed for Ambroise is "Marguerite Hofpower".
The 1860 census shows an Ambroise Hoffpauir, 9 years old, living with the household of Jean Richard and Zelonise Plaisance. Catherine Hoffpauir Fischer says that her Father ( Alexander Hoffpauir ) recalled that John Hardy Hoffpauir gave Ambroise to the Richards family when he was a young boy, after his wife (Amy) died. Although this may in part be true, there is no evidence that John Hardy Hoffpauir ever married an Amy, and in fact, his wife Constance Fontenot was still recorded as living with him in the same census. It's more likely that John Hardy Hoffpauir may have been raising Ambroise, and for whatever reason, the Richard family adopted him prior to the 1860 census.
Felton Morgan has Ambroise listed as the son of John Hardy Hoffpauir's sister, Euphemie Hoffpauir, and that is the way I have shown him for several years. However, recent Y-DNA tests of a direct male descendant of Ambroise confirm that Ambroise's father must have been a male direct descendant of Thomas (the original Thomas Hoffpauer), so I have placed Ambroise in what I consider to be the most likely family.
Later research by Catherine Hoffpauir "Kitty" Fischer indicates that the likely scenario (but unproven) is that Marguerite was impregnated by her cousin, Thomas Hoffpauir (b. 1835) before his family moved to Texas, and that her child was raised by the Richard family. We don't have a record of when Margaret died. It may be that she died after child birth, as she was only 13 when Ambroise was born. However, in the record of one of Ambroise's marriages, he lists his mother's name, but not his father's, only inserting "deceased" for him. This would imply that his mother was still alive at that time.
This is one family mystery that may never be confirmed.
Catherine Hoffpauir (Kitty) has done extensive research on Ambroise's family. In particular, she has confirmed that at least 4 of his grandchildren were deaf. Dora, Cecile, and Alexandre children of Arestide, and Elise, child of Julian. If anyone has additional information about any of the other descendants, please let me or Kitty know.
