Obituary - CROWLEY - Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 11, 2006 at 1 p.m. in Saint John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Mermentau, LA for Gary Paul Godeaux, 53, who died Wednesday, March 8, 2006 at 11 a.m. in Crowley. Msgr. Russell Harrington will celebrate the Mass of Christian Burial and the graveside services at Estherwood Cemetery. He will also lead the Rosary at 7 p.m. Friday. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. Friday until 11 p.m. and continue on Saturday from 8 a.m. until service time. Mr. Godeaux is survived by his wife of 31 years, Sheila Cormier Godeaux of Midland; two daughters, Kayla Godeaux Hoffpauir of Midland; and Kylie Godeaux Schmaltz and her husband, "Chuck" of Estherwood; three loving grandchildren, Macy Paige Hoffpauir, Lily Claire Hoffpauir and Gabe Joseph Schmaltz; three sisters, Shelby Maris and Gay Guidry of Mermentau, and Coreada Hoffpauir of Roberts Cove; and two brothers, Gerald Godeaux and Willie Godeaux of Mermentau. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gus and Eudia Godeaux of Mermentau and his father-in-law, Junior Cormier of Midland. Gary was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather. He was full of life and loved being around people. Everyone he met became his friend. Gary was a past Grand Knight of KC Council #5499; he was a present a member of KC Council #4791. Gary was presently serving as vice-president of the newly formed Southwest Acadia Water Corporation. He played a vital role in getting that water system started. Gary coached girls softball for many years and served as president of the Estherwood and Morse Little League. Gary was a member of the Evangeline Bass Busters and the B.A.S.S. Federation. He had a great love for the sports of fishing and hunting. He also guided for the Gueydan Hunting Club. With that said, nothing held a place in his heart like the sport of basketball. Gary has always been remembered by his high school basketball career. The Midland Rebel # 33 player so many have never forgotten now passed away 33 years after his high school career ended. Gary fought a hard battle with cancer for 32 months. His strength, determination, strong will to live and wonderful attitude made that battle possible. Gary worked for PPG Industries in Lake Charles for 26 years as an insulator. Along with his employment at PPG, he was also a member of the PPG Emergency Squad for many years. He was also a union member of Local #470. Geesey-Ferguson Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
