LAFAYETTE - Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2001, at a Mass of Christian Burial at St. John Cathedral Catholic Church for Dr. Roy Guilliot, 83, who died at 5:30 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 14, 2001, at Lafayette General Medical Center. Entombment will be in Calvary Mausoleum of the Resurrection. The Rev. Monsignor Glen John Provost will be the celebrant of the Mass. Con-celebrants will be the Rev. Roy Edwards and the Rev. Monsignor Harry Benefield. The Rev. Keith Derouen, the Rev. Monsignor Charles Mallet and the Rev. Monsignor Richard von Phul Mouton will also be in attendance. Musician Tom Niel, organist, Melody Thibodeaux, soloist, and Lauren Baker, Violinist, will present "Pie Jesu" by Lloyd Webber, "I Know That My Redeemer Liveth" by Handel, "In Paradisum" by Faure and "Intermezzo" by Maschagni. Dr. Guilliot, a native of Youngsville, was a resident of Lafayette for 60 years. He was the son of the late Jerry Jerome Guilliot and Olivia LeBlanc Guilliot. He graduated from Cathedral High School in 1934. He graduated with a bachelor of science degree from Louisiana State University, magna cum laude. From there he went on to Loyola School of Dentistry in New Orleans, served as president of PSI Omega fraternity and received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in 1942. Upon graduating from dental school, Dr. Guilliot served as a dental officer in the U.S. Naval Service, stationed in North Africa and Italy during World War II. Having attained the rank of lieutenant commander, he was honorably discharged on Oct. 14, 1946. After his tour of duty, Dr. Guilliot practiced dentistry in Lafayette until retiring in 1984. His son, Dr. Albert Guilliot, joined his practice in 1981. During his years of practice, Dr. Guilliot was instrumental in introducing young dentists embarking on their careers to the practice of dentistry. One of his proudest charitable accomplishments was the development of a dental clinic associated with the Father A.O. Sigur Service Center. In 1987, this clinic was named the Dr. Roy Guilliot Dental Clinic in honor of the many hours of donated dental services that he provided to the needy and underprivileged of the Acadiana area. It was to be the only clinic of its kind in and beyond an eight parish area. For many years, Dr. Guilliot also provided the dental services for the Carmelite Monastery. After his retirement, Dr. Guilliot continued his involvement in the community by donating his time to St. Joseph's Diner and University Medical Center. In addition to his family life and dental practice, Dr. Guilliot was involved in many professional, civic and church activities. He was a life member of the American Dental Association, the Louisiana Dental Association and the 3rd District Dental Association of which he was president in 1959. He served on the board of directors and was also a member of the board of trustees for Lafayette General Hospital. He served on the board of directors for Cathedral High School. Other memberships included the Louisiana State Health Planning Advisory Council and the Goals for Louisiana Committee. Dr. Guilliot was quite involved in church activities. He was a long time parishioner of the Cathedral of St. John Catholic community. He was a member and past president of St. Vincent de Paul, member and past president of the Holy Name Society, served as captain of Our Lady of the Oaks Retreat House in Grand Coteau for seven years and was a member and past president of the Carmelite Guild. He was a 4th Degree Knight in Knights of Columbus No. 1286. Dr. Guilliot was also a charter member of Serra Club. He was a charter member of Oakborne Country Club and was active in Mardi Gras for over 40 years having been a member of the Krewe of Gabriel and a charter member of Les Brigands de Lafitte. Survivors include one daughter, Anita Guilliot Saitta; three sons, Roy "Butch" Guilliot Jr., Paul Jerome Guilliot and Dr. Albert Guilliot; three daughters-in-law, Rose Kiehl, Mary Gretchen Duhon and Kathleen Walker; one son-in-law, Vincent J. Saitta; and nine grandchildren, Joyce, Patrick and Mary Elise Saitta, Louis Craig Hoffpauir, Paul and Lauren Guilliot and John, Sarah and Jared Guilliot. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jerry and Olivia Guilliot; his loving wife of 53 years, Joyce Blanchet Guilliot; his sister, Gladys Denais; and one brother, O. C. "Dan" Guilliot. Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Patrick Vincent Saitta, John Albert Guilliot II, Jared Walker Guilliot, his son-in-law, Vincent Joseph Saitta, and his nephews, Ogden Clarence Guilliot Jr., John Paul Blanchet III, and William Brice Francez III. Honorary pallbearers are Dr. Michael Alexander, Dr. Pat Bienvenu, Paul Blanchet Jr., Dr. Richard Bourgeois, Tim Chaisson, Walter Comeaux, Doucet Coussan, Tom Derveloy, Ellis Dupliex, Dr. Wallace Fuselier, Dr. William Sonnier, Randolph Joseph Trappey and Sam Walker. The family requests that visitation from 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. today. A rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m. today. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any donations be made in his name to the Carmelite Monastery and the Father A.O. Sigur Center. The funeral is under the direction of Delhomme Funeral Home, 1011 Bertrand Drive, Lafayette.
