Obituary: LAFAYETTE - Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 21, 2008, in the Delhomme Chapel of the Flowers for Gladys Hoffpauir Robinette, 88, who passed away Thursday, Jan. 17, 2008. The Rev. Jan Holloway, Pastor of Lafayette First United Methodist Church will reside over the services. Interment will take place at the Lafayette Protestant Cemetery. Gladys was born Aug. 1, 1919, in Crowley, to Sidney Hoffpauir and Leila Smith Hoffpauir. She is a native of Acadia Parish. Gladys attended Rayne High School earning her diploma at 16. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Southwestern Louisiana Institute in 1939, and her Master of Arts degree from George Peabody College, Vanderbilt University in 1942. She was a teacher; a teacher trainer at Hamilton Laboratory School; and a Professor in the College of Education at SLI and USL (now ULL) for more than 40 years. She and her husband devoted their lives to the University and hundreds of teachers and administrators they trained and inspired. In 1957, Gladys was Louisiana Teacher of the Year. In 2004, the ULL College of Education Alumni Chapter recognized her outstanding work in the field of education with its Lifetime Achievement Award. She was an active contributor in many professional, community service and religious organizations. She frequently served in the major leadership positions in these groups. It simply isn't possible to measure the depth and breath of the influence for good that Gladys had on her thousands of students, colleagues, and especially her family. Survivors include her niece, Gloria Stilley Eakin of Kingwood, Texas; great nephews, William Eakin, of Kingwood, and Mark Eakin, of Lafayette; and a great niece, Stacie Eakin of Kingwood, Texas. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Walter Robinette; her parents; and five sisters, Bulah Dommert, Grace Allen, Hattie Stilley, Iva Mae Elliott, and Wava H. Hoffpauir. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Walter and Gladys Robinette Endowment Scholarship, University of Louisiana of Lafayette, P.O. Box 44050, Lafayette, LA 70504. The family requests visiting hours be observed Sunday, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and Monday, from 8 a.m. until the time of service. Pallbearers will be Dr. Huey McCauley, William Harlon Eakin, II, William Harlon Eakin III, Tyler Joseph Eakin, Jonathan Mark Eakin and Michael Andrew Cutchen.
