Obituary: NEW LONDON - Services for Mary Vivian Spear, 100, New London, are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7, 2007, at New London United Methodist Church with the Rev. Kelly Krone officiating. Burial will be in Mason Cemetery, Arp, under direction of Burrows Overton Funeral Home.
Mrs. Spear died 9:25 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2007, at Sunshine Nursing Home in New London after a lengthy illness. Mary Vivian Spear was born Aug. 21, 1907, in Crowley, La., to Alexander Hoffpauir and Edmonia Wieoble Hoffpauir. She was a member of New London United Methodist Church and active in the Methodist Women's group, and was a former member of New London Lioness Club. She moved to East Texas 75 years ago from South Texas, and was preceded in death by her husband, C.D. Doc Spear in 1984. She was a graduate of Crowley, La., High School and Lafayette Institute, and attended business college in Port Arthur. She was the daughter of a Confederate soldier. Survivors include two daughters, Tris Spear Elliott, Euless, and Janell Spear Haggart, Charlotte, N.C.; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Haggart, Robert Haggart, Lily Kate Haggart, Henry Haggart, Daniel Haggart, Marcus Elliott, Mitchell Elliott, Bryce Laws and Barrett Laws. Pallbearers are Steve Elliott, Steve Laws, David Haggart, Duncan Haggart, Marcus Elliott, Mitchell Elliott, Bryce Laws and Barrett Laws. The family would appreciate memorial contributions to New London United Methodist Church instead of flowers. Our sincere thanks to the staff of Sunshine Nursing Home and the many friends who have helped along the way. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
