Erasco J. Hoffpauir

(27 Jan 1877 - 28 May 1942)

10 May 1877 - Baptized at my own house, Erasco, infant son of James and Melina Hoffpauir...born 29 January 1877. - Diary of William W. Shepherd, St. Landry Methodist Circuit Rider, 1874 to 1891.
In the 1880 Census of Vermilion Parish, Erasco is listed in the household of Thomas Hoffpauir and Melina Foreman. This may be an error in the census, or he may have been living with relatives.

Times-Picayune of May 1942:
Abbeville, LA, May 30 --E. J. Hoffpauir, 65 years old, former editor of the Abbeville Meridional, died yesterday afternoon at his home following a long illness.
Funeral services were held this afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Abbeville Methodist Church. Burial was in the Graceland cemetery here.
Surviving Mr. Hoffpauir are his widow, nee May Beall of Alexandria [note: actually she was a patient at the mental hospital in Jackson, LA at this time and had been there for 20 years]; a son, Elrod [note: the son's name was actually "Elwood" not "Elrod"] Meaux Hoffpauir of California; two half-brothers, Claude Hoffpauir, pressman for the Daily Advertiser in Lafayette, and Lloyd Hoffpauir of Wadsworth, Kansas, and one half-sister, Mrs. Effie Lee of Port Neches, Tex.
A native of Vermilion Parish, Mr. Hoffpauir was the son of the late James Hoffpauir and Mrs. Melinda Meaux Hoffpauir. He resided a few years in Indian Bayou, Vermilion Parish, and moved to Abbeville, where he was editor of the Abbeville Meridional for 14 years, succeeding the late Dr. C. J. Edwards. Mr. Hoffpauir studied for the ministry at one time. [note: I am hoping to learn more about his studies for the ministry since this line was omitted for his obituary in the Abbeville newspaper's article.]
During his editorship he fought the Ku Klux Klan, encouraged cultural development in Vermilion parish and was an active supporter of semipro baseball teams in this area.
Mr. Hoffpauir had been in declining health for eight years. In 1934 he was succeeded by Ralph Bienvenu of St. Martinville, who became news editor of the Meridional. floyd d. Edwards, owner of the Meridional, assumed the editorship and continued as publisher of the paper.
[note: The Abbeville Meridional of June 1942 ran Erasco J. Hoffpauir's obituary with the added final sentence: The funeral arrangements were in charge of R. W. Bernard.]
