Daniel Le Blanc

(Abt 1626 - Abt 1698)

I think it is important to note once again that all of the information on Family Tree Maker, Ancestry.com and such is only as accurate as the people who have contributed that information. The information is contributed by people like us.
As a descendant of Daniel LeBlanc, I get weary of seeing incorrect information as to Daniel's supposed ancestors in France and that he died at such and such a place in Acadia.
The fact of the matter is that no matter how one might want to connect Daniel LeBlanc to ancestors in France, it cannot be done. All of his
records that would tell us this were either destroyed or lost during the Deportation of 1755 and to make matters worse, many records were also destroyed during the French Revolution.
What we do know: Daniel came from France (we do not know the specific place of origin) to Acadia and was born Abt. 1626 - he died Abt. 1698 in Port-Royal. That is it - there is nothing else. There are other records that tell us who he was and some of what he did but we may never know *where he came from nor who his parents were*.
The errors online are perpetuated each time someone with LeBlanc ancestors accepts the erroneous information then post it to their own sites. As webmasters of genealogy sites, I think we should be mindful that people believe what they read and we should want our information to be correct from the truly knowledgeable sources.
My source for what the truth is on Daniel LeBlanc: Stephen White, Genealogist at Moncton University who has just published the Dictionnaire Généalogique des Familles Acadiennes. In the Dictionnaire, Steve White states quite clearly that the place of origin for Daniel is clearly *unknown* (Page 984) - it isn't Martaizé as the myth continues to be perpetuated online. All we do know is that he came from France.
At the American Canadian Genealogical Society's conference last year, I asked Stephen White if we will ever know where Daniel and Françoise Gaudet came from. Stephen's answer to all of us attending that talk was that it was unlikely unless some new documents heretofore unseen/unknown/unfound turn up.
Other professional researchers have come to the same conclusion. It is my hope that all LeBlanc descendants - either direct or with collateral lines - will remove the erroneous information from their sites so that we can end the myth surrounding the origins of Daniel LeBlanc. I too would love to know where Daniel came from but being able to name some place in France isn't important if it isn't the truth.
