Richmond Hoffpauir
(23 Sep 1877 - 5 Jun 1924)
Here is some additional information on Richmond Hoffpauir and his death on June 5, 1924. Richmond was generally known as "Rich" or "Richie," which may account for his name being incorrectly listed as "Richard" in this newspaper article.

Richard Hoffpauir Kills Himself: News was received here Thursday morning that Richard Hoffpauir had killed himself. Sheriff [Allen] Wheat made an investigation and found that the poor fellow had gone to the barn and with a shotgun had shot his head nearly off. He lived northeast of Raywood [Liberty County]; he leaves a wife and several children. Truly he was a good citizen and a good man.
Note: My grandfather John Lewis Ladd (1894-1972) was a son of Cornelius Ladd and Mary Ophelia DeBlanc, and a grandson of Louis DeBlanc and Charlotte Hoffpauir. That made his mother and Richmond Hoffpauir first cousins. Grandpa never bought the official version of this being a suicide. The story he heard was that Richmond had supposedly taken off his shoe or boot and fired the shotgun with a toe. Grandpa never thought that was possible and didn't think he had
been depressed. Most people presumed that his wife's boyfriend did the killing. I never have pursued that angle, which would be pretty difficult to follow. I would like to see if she remarried promptly, but I'll keep you posted.
