George BRUCE

(2 Apr 1760 - 1830)

"Revolutionary War Veterans of Greene County, Ohio". In the book it has a one page reference to George Bruce married to the widow Biggs and names two children: James & Joshua who it states resided in Delaware county in 1820. This book has the proof we have been looking for years. We now have proof of Joshua's ancestry which comes through John Bruce of Shenandoah and his wife, Margaret McMahon.

George and his brother James M., were twins. Born on the north branch of the Potomac river abt 1760 in Frederick co., MD. The family moved abt 1770-75 to what became Pittsburgh, PA, where the father served under George Rogers Clark. After the Rev war the family floated down the Ohio river to Louisville and settled on Coxes creek, 6 mile north of Bardstown in Nelson co., KY. George served as a corporal and as a sergeant in Captain Robert Beall's co. 9th Virginia reg. mostly in 1779 with some service in 1780. Listed himself as a farmer. Applied fro a pension in 1820 while residing in Hardin co., KY. He apparently with his two sons, moved up to Greene co., OH by 1829 when he applied for a transfer stating that he was moving because he had lost all of that part of his family that resided with him in KY. In 1830, only James is listed in census record with no older men in the household. George died in IN in 1831 while visiting with relatives. buried in Greene co., OH. NOTE: George's two sons were all ready in OH when he left KY as stated in his pension record.

George Bruce, of Nelson co., KY., age 60, in Hardin co., court, KY. Sept 1820 says he was in Capt. Robert Bell's co. Commanded by Col. Crawford and Col. Gibson. Was in the battle of Brandywine. Discharged in PA in 1779.
