Valentine ALLEN
(29 Apr 1726 - 17 Sep 1799)
Sometime after the death of his father, Valentine Allen moved to NC; he was there by 1762, at which time he witnessed a deed between James Gates & James Gates Jr. (Rowan Co Deed Bk 5, p 362) !* On August 25, 1764, Valentine purchased 620 ac on north side of Dan River from Alexander Hunter. (Rowan Co Deed Bk 6, p 170) In 1778, he bought 386 ac on either side of Sharp's Creek, adjoining the land of his brother, William Hunt Allen, and in the same year, purchased a 390 ac tract adjoining his other land. !* On Jan 6 1782, the Commissioners of Guilford Co, NC purchased from Captain Valentine Allen, 120 bushels of corn for the sum of $93.75 plus interest as agreeable to an Act of General Assembly. (Revolutionary Army Accounts, Vol I, p 114, folio #2, at the NC Archieves, Raleigh) !* On Oct 13, 1778, the Entry Officer of claims for lands in Guilford Co NC, issued orders to the Surveyor that he was required to lay off and survey for Captain Valentine Allen a tract of 560 ac on Sharp's Creek. (Grant #162, Entry #380, was issued Nov 13, 1779.) The DAR Patriot Index lists Valentine Allen as a Revolutionary Soldier. !* ALLEN FAMILY--WICKER, p 20 states Valentine was Lt. Col. in Rockingham Co VA, during the Revolutionary War. (Rockingham Co was cut from Guilford Co in 1785.
Valentine Allen was the first of the Allen clan to reside in Rockingham Co., N. C. In 1790, only 7 slave holders had more than 20 slaves. Valentine was one of the 7 with 28 slaves, which indicates that he was a wealthy Planter on a large scale with a large Plantation. Source: Brian Wall, Pa. He was spoken of as "Colonel Allen", He and his wife lived on the Dan River near Loan Island Ford. The cemetery is located on the Motsinger farm near the Dan River and near the original settlement of Valentine and Nancy Allen. Early records were in Charles City Co., Va.
