EASTHAMPTON VILLAGE - Continued, Vol 54, July 1900, p 301 - 308 Mr. Thomas JAMES, d. 16 Jun 1696, - "He was Minister of the Gospell & Pasture [sic] of the Church of Christ." (The position of this grave is singular - the head towards the east, tradition says, by the direction of its occupant.) [2] [3] Rev. Thomas James, son of Rev. Thomas James of Lincolnshire, Eng., came to America in 1632 [4] at the age of ten years, accompanying his father[5] in the ship "William and Francis ". He was pastor of the church at Easthampton for forty-six years. Of him Hon. H. P. Hedges says: "Minister James understood the Indian language; sometimes instructed the Indians, preached to them and acted as interpreter. He was learned, resolute, just, sincere, fearless, active, a powerful personality." [6] Rev.
