John DESPENCER

In 1386 Sir John attended John, Duke of Lancaster (who had assuned thetitle of King of Castile), in the latter's expedition to Spain, and inconsideration of such service he received letters of protection from King Richard II(reigned 1377-1399) for one year which bore date of 6 March 1386. Afterwardshe was high in the esteem of King Henry V (reigned 1413-1422) and was bothesquire of the Body and Keeper of the Great Wardrobe to that monarch. In virtureof the first mentioned appointment he was a constant attendant upon KingHenry V in his military expeditions to France, and it is definitely known that hewas present at the siege of Rouen about 1419. World Book - A settlement existed at what is now Rouen in ancienttimes. In 1431, the English-who controlled Rouen at the time-burned Joan of Arcat the stake in the city. Rouen suffered heavy damage in World War II butwas rebuilt after the war.

!John was in the retinue of John of Gaunt, nominal king of Castile during his voyage to Spain. King's letter dated March 1386. Esquire to the body of Henry V, keeper of his great wardrobe and attended him during his warlike expeditions. He was with the King during the siege of Roan.
