John BOUNDS

In 1634 John Bownd, age 20, set sail from London, England for Barbados aboard the "Hopewell".He held land in Northumberland Co., VA from Jan. 1669 through July 1671. John and Ann Bounds crossed Chesapeake Bay and settled along the Nanticoke River in the northern section of Somerset Co. that is now Wicomico Co. He patented land on both sides of the river, thereby owning land in both Somerset and Dorchester Counties.
John Bound, planter, filed a claim of "headrights" in Somerset Co. on Nov. 12, 1672 for himself, wife Ann, and son William. He received 50 acres of land for each member of his family, which he patented on Aug. 1, 1673, and called "Yearsland". In 1672 he also purchased 300 acres of land patented to him as "Lemster". John Bounds, along with Robert Collier, William Piper, and James Weatherley, was appointed to "assist ye justices in laying out and dividing ye county into parishes", for the establishment of the Church of England in Somerset County.
John was chosen vestryman for Stepney Parish. The first Stepney Parish church was built in 1698, and replaced in 1735 by the Green Hill Church, officially Saint Bartholomew's which still stands on the bank of the Naticoke River. The records of this parish contain many entries of the births, deaths, and marriages of the Bounds Family. John Bounds wrote his will ion Oct. 10, 1700, and it was probated on Dec. 6, 1700. ***
