Individual Details
Frank Muldrom HUBBARD
(1920 - 2007)
Frank Hubbard was born in Florence, S.C., in 1920 -- the same year his father, Francis Evans Hubbard, founded the construction company.
The elder Hubbard moved his family, along with part of his business, to Central Florida in 1937.
In June 1942, Frank Hubbard was 19 years old, newly married to Ruth Scorgie of Frostproof and learning the construction business when he enlisted in the Army during World War II.
His service netted him a Bronze Star and his military job of rebuilding roads and bridges in France taught him "determination and responsibility" -- two of the qualities that helped him turn his father's construction company into a multimillion-dollar corporation, family members said.
After his father's death in 1954, Frank Hubbard assumed leadership of Hubbard Construction Co. and took it to the next level, building roads and infrastructure for numerous high-profile projects like Walt Disney World, the Kennedy Space Center, the University of Central Florida, the Orange County Convention Center and Orlando International Airport.
The company was behind countless road projects, including Interstate 4, the Florida Turnpike and the Beeline.
Along the way, he learned the value of giving back..
As the chairman of the construction company, Frank started the Hubbard Foundation, which was renamed A. Friends Foundation Trust after the business was sold in 1984.
Through the foundation, he gave millions of dollars, as well as countless volunteer hours.
In addition to serving as a director of SunBank N.A. and vice chairman of SunBanks Inc., he served as president, director, chairman or adviser to dozens of nonprofit organizations, as well as public, private and educational institutions.
Among a list of honors and awards that he accumulated over the years was the National Society of Fund Raising's 1988 National Philanthropist of the Year and the Leukemia Society of America's 1985 Service to Mankind Award.
