Uriah GLOVER

(1705 - Bef 20 Nov 1769)

Uriah Glover, Sr. born on Long Island in 1740. When grown man, crossed over into NJ and located near Elizabeth. Moved to Uniontown, PA where entire family remained until 1797 when they "sold out" and started to Louisville, KY.
Came across the wilderness to Pittsburgh and floated down the Ohio River on a flat-boat. The landing was made just above the falls where the city (Louisville) now stands. They "washed out" into the country and settled in Shelby Co., KY. The Glovers continued to live in KY until the spring of 1814 when they moved to Orange Co., IN. Uriah, Jr. had already been over in 1812 and "entered" a large body of land on Lost River, seven miles east of Orleans, and the family had only to go and take possession. This was 2 years before IN became a state. (The above written by John B. Glover, great-grandson of Uriah Glover, Sr. in 1903)

"In my research, I found that Charles Glover came to Salem, Mass. from England about 1630. From there he went to New Haven, Conn. and on to Southold, Suffolk Co., Long Island, NY where he lived prior to 1654. Charles' wife was named Esther ---.

He had a shipyard in Southold which was later operated by his son (Samuel). A piece of property was left by Charles to his son (Samuel) who in turn left it to his son (Samuel) who left it to his son (Charles). This Charles left it to his son (Grover Glover), who died in 1803 without children and it was sold. One of these Glovers, probably the first Samuel must have been the father of Uriah, who had a son named Uriah born in 1740 in Southold. The family moved to NJ early in the 1740's. The Morrison (Morristown?) Presbyterian Church Records show the marriage of John Glover to Mary Lyon on Sept. 14, 1747, the baptism of Charles Glover in 1749, and the marriage of one of the Glover girls to Samuel Hull in 1757. The girls, Martha and Deborah both married men named Hull.

Uriah Glover, Sr. leaves a will dated 1762 in which he names all these children and appoints his son (Uriah Jr.) and wife Martha as the Executors. The will is proved in 1769. Charles is under 21 years old at the time. Uriah gets most of the property. John is left 5 schillings. However, he being the oldest and married several years before, could have received his share at that time. John was born at Southold........................(all the above just for your info[jc]).....

John Glover married Melinda Genn (daug. of John Genn) April 12, 1814, Bardstown, Nelson Co., KY. Melinda born VA 1794 died about 1860 in Mich. John died before 1850. John & Melinda were my great-great grandparents.

You will find the history of the family from here on in John Bowen Glover's Family Records, except the line of my great great grandparents (John & Malinda Glover). They left KY after their first son (Andrew Jackson) was born. Their second child (Nancy) my grandmother was born Jan. 16, 1816 in Orange Co., IN near Paoli. The other children, Jane and James (twins) were born in 1820. Uriah was born 1822 in IN. Cecelia was born 1823 in IN. Nancy Glover married John Ball on May 10, 1836. He was born Orange Co.,
Goshen, NY. John and Nancy were my great-grandparents. You probably are not interested in the rest of my line, if so I will write it out for you. Sincerely, Mrs. Ruth B. Knapton, 601 Alhambra St., Crockett, CA 94525."

The above was donated to the WCHS on 3/4/1973 by Mrs. Austie McAninah, 7197 W. Blvd., Indianapolis, IN.

"It is my idea that Uriah Glover, Sr. was a gunsmith as we would call it today. He made guns and ammunition for the army. He did in his NJ residence and also when the whiskey revolution came on he was employed in the (?) for the same purpose.
This would entitle him to war service. I do not think he was a soldier in the war but did other work that would qualify him." The above was written by a man from Fayetteville, WV to Miss Mabel E. Tichenor at Princeton, IN on Nov. 11, 1940.
