Arthur Archibald COODY

"Arthur Coody served with the 42nd Foot Rangers, 2nd Regiment, Georgia Militian 1760 under the command of General James Edward Oglethorpe. He fought in the French and Indian War and gave a deposition in 1763 stating that Creek Indians with poles adorned with scalps chased him from noon on Saturday until Sunday morning, when he came upon a group of Cherokee who could protect him. Pay Vouchers of record include 1 Jan. 1760 to 1 July 1764. After release from active duty with the Georgia Militia, he made his home on the Horns Creek area of western South Carolina (between Turkey Creek and the Savannah River in Edgefield County.) He served on the Grand Jury in 1778, and the Petit Jury in 1779. He was educated, owning a dictionary and kept two sets of books of his farming operation. At the time of his death he owned six (6) slaves. DEATH: Date determined from application by Edith, his wife, to become Administrix of Estate on 28 Aug. 1782."
