Notes
Emigration
James and Anne had 11 children between 1630 and 1652, The first 4 were born in England and their births are recorded in Parish records of St. Lawrence Reading, Berkshire, England. The other children were born in Barnstable, Mass.Residence
While a member of Mr. Lothrop’s church in Barnstable, he settled in Barnstable independently of the reverend and his flock (who had come from London).Land Record
His house lot of 8 acres was at Coggin’s Pond, bounded on the north by Gov. Hinckley, east by the Commons (now the ancient graveyard), south by the Commons; west by the highway. Will
He died in OCT 1690 in Barnstable, Massachusetts. His personal estate appraised at L19.17.3. He was probably over eighty years old, and had probably distributed some of his personal estate before his death, as indicated in the will.Alt name
'The correct spelling of his name is a question of doubt. As a matter of fact, people in those times were not particular, and the same individual did not spell his own name uniformly, in many instances; there was no standard of English orthography then. In the foregoing pedigree the name is spelled Hamelyn and Hamelin, in the record of baptisms, Hamblin and hamlin; in the colonial records, Hamlene, Hamlen and Hamblen. His pastor, Rev. Mr. Lothrop wrote the name uniformly, Hamling. Rev. Mr. Russell, a successor of Mr. Lothrop, wrote it Hamlin. His sons and descendants for the first four generations, generally wrote it Hamblen; but as signed to his will, it is spelled Hamlin. The descendants spell the name variously: Hamlin, Hamlen, Hamline, Hamblin and Hamblen.....He married about 1628 probably in Berkshire, England Anne Scott.[3](later generations spelled it Hamlin)Endnotes
