Elizabeth BLAIR

(1700 - 6 May 1788)

Elizabeth appeared in court on 26 May 1788 on the Andrew Heath farm. Her son, Richard, appeared in court on the same day. Andrew Heath was her grandson.

Some reports show her home country as Wales.

The word 'blair' appears commonly throughout Scotland in place names, as it means 'open plain'. Records exist of a Blair of that Ilk of Ayrshire, receiving lands near Irvine in 1205. Sir Bryce Blair of Blair was executed in 1296 by the English. His nephew and heir, Roger de Blair was friendly with Robert the Bruce, and received royal favour after the victory of Bannockburn in 1314. The family made powerful alliances, following marriages into the families of Kennedy, Montgomery, and Cochrane. Madelaine Blair of Blair married William Scot, second son of John Scot of Malleny, who reverted to the Blair name and resided at Blair in Ayrshire. The Blairs of Balthyock are thought to descend from a younger son of the Ayrshire knights, Thomas Blair the second of Balthyock, who received a charter for the lands of Ardblair, Baldowie and Balgillo in Forfarshire in 1399. Although this line ended in the eighteenth century, Blair-Oliphants still live in Ardblair Castle near Blairgowrie.
