Death
As remembered by CM Watters: Grandpa Will was killed in a train accident in 1944. My mother was pregnant with Dan. Will was a brakeman, riding mainly in the caboose, laying out and swinging lanterns to guide trains on and off sidetracks. The day of the accident, his work was done, and he was riding into town in the engine with his buddy. The train was slowed, or stopped over a town road crossing when brakes failed on a large truck running perpendicular to the train. The engineer yelled to Will to jump, the engineer made it but Grandpa did not. The front part of the train tipped into a swamp, also carrying scalding water, and Grandpa was thrown into the swamp. Mom told me that when cousin Ernie came to the accident scene, Grandpa asked him to push his head under so he could die. His arm was scalded off. There is an obituary from the Antigo paper. This is how Mom knew there was no Hell, it was here already.Endnotes
