On 4 September 1963, while on a business trip, Emerson boarded Swissair Flight 306 in Zurich, Switzerland with a French Beloit Corporation sales associate. They were apparently going to continue by automobile to France after the flight stopover in Geneva. Eight minutes after the plane took off, it crashed in the outskirts of Dürrenäsch, Switzerland, killing all 80 aboard.News about the crash appeared in many newspapers. Newspapers in the United States identified passenger Emerson N. Glauner Jr. by name.
The crash has been attributed to overheated brakes and wheel rims which partially disintegrated. When the landing gear was retracted, the overheated rims damaged a hydraulic line, causing a fire and complete loss of control of the plane. Before the plane took off, the crew used the jet engines to disperse fog by proceeding half-way down the runway. This required excessive braking.
